Dr. Donald Craig Brater to Receive Oscar B. Hunter Memorial Award

Alexandria, VA (December 15, 2011) — Donald Craig Brater, MD, has been selected by the American Society for Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics (ASCPT) as the 2012 recipient of the Oscar B. Hunter Memorial Award in Therapeutics.

This prestigious scientific award honors individuals for outstanding achievements in the field of clinical pharmacology. Established in 1955, the award recognizes scientists who have influenced and mobilized clinical pharmacology education, drug research and patient care throughout their careers.

ASCPT will present the award to Dr. Brater on March 16, 2012, during the 113th Annual Meeting at the National Harbor in Maryland, prior to his lecture.

Dr. Brater is the Walter J. Daly Professor and Dean of the Indiana University School of Medicine (IUSM). As a world-renowned expert on renal and cardiovascular drug effects, Dr. Brater has championed evidence based use of cardiovascular medications, particularly diuretics. In 1993, Dr. Brater received the Rawls–Palmer Progress in Medicine Award. He received the American College of Clinical Pharmacology Distinguished Investigator Award in 1999 and was recognized the following year with the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America Foundation’s Award in Excellence. In 2007, Dr. Brater received the Lifetime Award for Distinguished Service in Years of Health Advancement from the Indiana Public Health Foundation. He is a past president of the Association of Professors of Medicine and has chaired the American Board of Clinical Pharmacology.

Throughout his 34-year membership with ASCPT, Dr. Brater has held many leadership positions on the Board of Directors and Scientific Award, Scientific Program, and Editorial Committees; he also has served as ASCPT President. He is the 2011–2012 Chair of the Centers for Education and Research in Therapeutics (CERTs) Steering Committee, President of the Alliance for Academic Internal Medicine, a member of the Ethics Committee of the US Olympic Committee, a member of the Board and Past-President of the US Pharmacopeia, and a Fellow of the American College of Physicians.
