ASCPT Names Inaugural Recipient of Sheiner-Beal Pharmacometrics Award

Alexandria, VA (March 2, 2011) – Donald R. Stanski, MD, will receive the first Sheiner-Beal Pharmacometrics Award at the 2011 American Society for Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics (ASCPT) Annual Meeting.

The Sheiner-Beal Pharmacometrics Award was established by the Department of Bioengineering and Therapeutic Sciences at the University of California San Francisco. The award honors Dr. Lewis B. Sheiner and Dr. Stuart Beal, pioneers and leaders in the field of pharmacometrics, and acknowledges scientists who are researching and advancing the use of pharmacometrics to improve drug development.

Pharmacometrics utilizes models based on pharmacology, physiology and disease to understand and predict drug behavior. The application of statistical and mathematical methods in clinical pharmacology is believed to aid drug development, regulatory decisions and rational drug treatment.

ASCPT will present the award to Dr. Stanski on March 4, 2011, at its 112th Annual Meeting in Dallas, Texas. Dr. Stanski will deliver a comprehensive lecture on pharmacometrics titled “The Sheiner-Beal Vision of Pharmacometrics.”

Dr. Stanski is Vice President and Global Head of Modeling and Simulation at Novartis Pharma AG. He has played a fundamental role at Novartis to implement pharmacometrics as a key component of drug development. An expert in anesthetic clinical pharmacology, Dr. Stanski undertook his clinical pharmacology research training with Dr. Sheiner from 1977 to 1979. He has served as Professor and Chair of the Department of Anesthesia at Stanford University School of Medicine.
