ASCPT Member of the Month
The ASCPT Member of the Montha forum to recognize and thank a member of ASCPT who has supported the Society's endeavors. Each month ASCPT highlights ONE member who has gone above and beyond the call of duty! We hope you enjoy learning about your fellow members and always encourage your participation in Society events and activities.
ASCPT is proud to recognize Lu Amy Sun, MD, PhD as the January Member of the Month. Dr. Sun has been an active member of ASCPT since joining in 2000. Dr. Sun has served in a number of important roles in her time with ASCPT, she was a member of both the 2006 Strategic Planning Task Force. She also served on the ASCPT Board Selection Committee in 2005. She has been active scientifically for ASCPT by developing and chairing scientific symposia and currently chairs the Geriatric Clinical Pharmacology Scientific Section.
Dr. Sun is a Medical Director of Experimental Medicine at Procter & Gamble Pharmaceuticals, Inc. One of her major research interests is the development and application of pharmacogenomics and biomarkers in clinical trials to improve the safety and efficacy outcomes.
Dr. Sun has been involved in pharmacogenomic and biomarker research for many years, and has participated in several FDA Workshops on Pharmacogenomics in Drug Development. She is also a member of the National Pharmacogenomic Data Standard Team. She believes that pharmacogenomic and biomarker techniques have had, and will continue to have a significant impact on drug development and medicine, "Clinical pharmacologists, because of their extensive training and knowledge in pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics, are at the forefront of applying pharmacogenomic technology to drug development and individualized medicine."
Dr. Sun is also passionate about global clinical trials. Pharmaceutical companies have recently executed numerous clinical trials outside the US, including Asia. Conducting clinical trials on internationally diverse groups offers many benefits. To this end, Dr. Sun believes that clinical pharmacologists have the most ideal training to lead global clinical trials, "Their understanding of individual variability in drug therapy and their in-depth knowledge of ADME provides them with the necessary background to best conduct these innovative trials on diverse populations."
As chair of the Geriatric Section, ASCPT, Dr. Sun encourages clinical pharmacologists to become more involved in geriatric clinical pharmacology research. She said, "With the increasingly aging population, geriatric clinical pharmacology research has become more important than ever. Geriatric clinical pharmacologists can influence drug development for the geriatric population, help geriatricians minimize adverse events induced by drug-drug interactions, and play an important role in advancing geriatric health benefits."
Dr. Sun has found her membership with ASCPT both personally and professionally rewarding. Dr. Sun states, "One of the most exciting and rewarding experiences of being a member of ASCPT is to network with other scientist who are involved in the continuum of drug development that includes discovery, development, regulation and utilization."
Dr. Sun, thank you for your valuable leadership and your commitment to ASCPT and the discipline of clinical pharmacology!
