ASCPT Member of the Month

Member of the Month: Albert Dreisbach
Albert W. Dreisbach, MD

The ASCPT Member of the Month - a forum to recognize and thank a member of ASCPT who has supported the Society's endeavors. Each month ASCPT highlights one member on our web site who has gone above and beyond the call of duty! We also highlight the Member of the Month, along with two other members, in each edition of Clinical Pharmacology & Therapeutics (CPT). We hope you enjoy learning about your fellow members and always encourage your participation in Society events and activities.

ASCPT is proud to recognize Albert Dreisbach as the February Member of the Month. Dr. Dreisbach has been an active member since 1992 and has served in a number of leadership positions. He is the current chair of the Nephrology and Hypertension Section (HYP). Dr. Dreisbach will be chairing the "The Emerging Impact of Kidney Disease on Drug Metabolism and Transport" symposia at the 2007 Annual Meeting in Anaheim, CA.

Dr. Dreisbach was formally with Tulane University. During Hurricane Katrina he was evacuated by helicopter from Tulane Health Science Center after being trapped for five days. In reflecting on that experience Dr. Dreisbach says, "I was privileged to see real heroes in action."

He is currently Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Nephrology at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. His major research interests are the role of cytochrome P450 polymorphisms in cardiovascular disease which he doing in conjunction with the Jackson Heart Study. The Jackson Heart study involves a large African-American cohort (> 4,500) available for genetic epidemiological investigations. He is also studying CYP and vitamin K binding proteins (VKOR) polymorphisms on warfarin metabolism and response as well as the genetic basis of salt sensitive hypertension.

Dr. Dreisbach sees pharmacogenetics and genomics as the most exciting areas of clinical pharmacology. He says these areas, "provide powerful tools in explaining differences in drug kinetics and dynamics as well as adverse drug reactions," and believes that, "progress in this area will enable us to tailor our drug regimen to the individual."

Dr. Dreibach says his ASCPT membership, "has been an invaluable resource for me in staying current with the field of pharmacogenetics." He also views ASCPT's Annual Meeting as different from the other subspecialties because, "The members of ASCPT are always approachable and supportive of junior people." Thank you, Dr. Dreisbach, for your valuable leadership and your commitment to ASCPT and the discipline of clinical pharmacology!
