ASCPT Member of the Month

Member of the Month: Laura James
Laura P. James, MD

The ASCPT Member of the Month is a forum to recognize and thank a member of ASCPT who has supported the Society's endeavors. Each month on its web site, ASCPT highlights one member who has gone above and beyond the call of duty! We also highlight the Member of the Month, along with two other members, in each issue of Clinical Pharmacology & Therapeutics. We hope you will enjoy learning about fellow members and as always, encourage your participation in Society events and activities.

ASCPT is proud to recognize Laura James as the February Member of the Month. Dr. James is Section Chief, Clinical Pharmacology and Toxicology, Arkansas Children's Hospital and Department of Pediatrics, University of Arkansas in Little Rock, AR. Her research is primarily focused on acetaminophen toxicity. Specifically, she is interested in biomarkers of acetaminophen toxicity (acetaminophen protein adducts) and the translation of knowledge on adducts generated from animal studies to the clinical arena, using new, sensitive assays. In addition, she studies pathways of recovery in the liver following acetaminophen toxicity in a mouse model and was recently awarded NIH funding to advance these studies.

Laura has been a member of ASCPT since 1996 and has been active in the Pediatrics Section since that time and previously served on the Scientific Program Committee and as an abstract reviewer.

Dr. James believes the ability to take what has been described at the bench or in mouse models and apply it to a clinical setting is the most exciting area of clinical pharmacology. "The idea of potentially making a contribution to science that would effectively change the way that patients are diagnosed and treated or stratified by identification of specific risk factors is very exciting."

ASCPT provides Dr. James with the opportunity for feedback from trusted colleagues. "Clinical pharmacologists are rare and typically represent a few individuals at a single institution. The opportunity to receive constructive criticism from colleagues that understand the science is critical to me for continued growth as a physician scientist."

Thank you, Dr. James, for your valuable leadership and your continued commitment to ASCPT and the discipline of clinical pharmacology!
