ASCPT Member of the Month

Jean D. Gray, MD, FRCPC |
The ASCPT Member of the Month - a forum to recognize and thank a member of ASCPT who has supported the Society's endeavors. Each month ASCPT highlights one member on our web site who has gone above and beyond the call of duty! We also highlight the Member of the Month, along with two other members, in each edition of Clinical Pharmacology & Therapeutics (CPT). We hope you enjoy learning about your fellow members and always encourage your participation in Society events and activities.
ASCPT is proud to recognize Jean Gray as the March Member of the Month. Dr. Gray is a past President of ASCPT (2000-2001). Prior to her term as President she served as a member of the Board of Directors and Chair of both the Medical Education Committee and the Nominating Committee. In 2004 Dr. Gray became a founding member of the Council on Clinical Pharmacology and most recently contributed her knowledge and insight as part of ASCPT's Strategic Planning Task Force.
Dr. Gray began her career as a faculty member with Dalhousie University, Halifax, Nova Scotia and currently serves as Professor Emeritus - Medical Education, Medicine, and Pharmacology for the University. She was the founding Head of the University's Division of General Medicine within the Department of Medicine and a member of the founding Board of the Canadian Society of Internal Medicine. Dr. Gray served as Associate Dean of Postgraduate Medical Education (1988-96) and Associate Dean of Continuing Medical Education (1996-2002).
Dr. Gray spent much of her career as the only clinical pharmacologist in Atlantic Canada, a large geographic area with a substantial clinical and educational demand. She credits her participation in ASCPT's Annual Meeting with giving her the opportunity to, "acquire new knowledge and techniques, establish new research collaborations, and spend relaxation time with some very genuine and nice people. Every task I was asked to take on enhanced my knowledge and skills and allowed me to take on additional roles within my own medical school that I might not otherwise have been able to do."
Dr. Gray finds clinical pharmacology fascinating, "because it spans the entire spectrum of drug therapy, from concern for the individual (pharmacogenomics) to the rational use of drugs (population therapeutics). Research in the discipline requires knowledge of many methodologies, from molecular biology to clinical epidemiology and clinical trial design, and the involvement of individuals from a variety of backgrounds. The exciting area of clinical pharmacology for me is the application and utilization of this research in the clinic and the classroom as well as in shaping health policy."
A passionate and committed teacher herself she notes that, "the mentorship I received from individuals such as Terry Blaschke, Dick Weinshilboum, Bob Vestal, Darrell Abernethy, Neil Benowitz, Marcus Reidenberg, David Nierenberg, and many others has been critical to my career development and I am most grateful for their interest and concern."
Thank you, Dr. Gray, for your valuable leadership and your commitment to ASCPT and the discipline of clinical pharmacology!
