The ASCPT Member of the Month is a forum to recognize and thank a member of ASCPT who has supported the Society's endeavors. Each month on its web site, ASCPT highlights one member who has gone above and beyond the call of duty! We also highlight the Member of the Month, along with two other members, in each issue of Clinical Pharmacology & Therapeutics. We hope you will enjoy learning about fellow members and as always, encourage your participation in Society events and activities.
ASCPT is proud to recognize Tom Callaghan as the March Member of the Month. Dr. Callaghan is Associate Professor of Medicine and Pharmacology Toxicology at Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis, IN. In addition to serving on several ASCPT committees Dr. Callaghan was an invited speaker at ASCPT's 2007 Annual Meeting as part of the Meet the Experts Forum "Drug Interactions Individualized - Contributing to the Perfect Storm". In 2007 he also presented "Drug-Drug Interactions, an Evolution in Drug Development" as part of the ASCPT Clinical Pharmacology Curriculum Review Course.
Dr. Callaghan worked at the Lilly Laboratory for Clinical Research and was Director of US Exploratory Medicine until he joined the Division of Clinical Pharmacology at the Indiana University School of Medicine as an Associate Professor. He received his M.D. from the University of Kentucky Medical School. He completed his post graduate training and received a PhD in Pharmacology at the University of Minnesota Medical School. He is board certified in Internal Medicine and Clinical Pharmacology.
As a clinical pharmacologist in drug development, his focus was mainly translational medicine. For him this meant exploring the issue of outliers observed during Phase 1 clinical trials. He believes that linking efforts in pharmacogenetics and biomarkers with modeling and simulation is a promising path for implementing individualized medicine strategies. "The bundling of these three efforts and their migration from the research to the clinical practice arena is a necessary step if healthcare professionals are to adopt individualized medicine concepts."
His years in ASCPT have given him the opportunity to interact with leaders in the field of therapeutics and drug development. "The scope of the discipline is immense, and ASCPT offers a wonderful opportunity for sharing information and ideas both on a research and policy level. Moreover, the enthusiasm and ideals of the Society's members instill confidence in the future of the discipline."
Thank you, Dr. Callaghan, for your valuable leadership and your continued commitment to ASCPT and the discipline of clinical pharmacology!
