ASCPT Member of the Month

Member of the Month: Terry Shapiro
Theresa Ann Barry Shapiro, MD, PhD

The ASCPT Member of the Month is a forum to recognize and thank a member of ASCPT who has supported the Society's endeavors. Each month on its web site, ASCPT highlights one member who has gone above and beyond the call of duty! We also highlight the Member of the Month, along with two other members, in each issue of Clinical Pharmacology & Therapeutics. We hope you will enjoy learning about fellow members and as always, encourage your participation in Society events and activities.

ASCPT is proud to recognize Terry Shapiro as the April Member of the Month. Dr. Shapiro is Professor of Medicine, Director, Division of Clinical Pharmacology, Department of Medicine and Department of Pharmacology and Molecular Sciences, Professor, Joint Appointment in Department of Molecular Microbiology and Immunology, The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Baltimore, MD.

Dr. Shapiro has been at Johns Hopkins since 1981. She is a member of the study section for Microbiology and Infectious Diseases, National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.

Dr. Shapiro believes the most interesting and exciting areas of clinical pharmacology are “the interface between laboratory and clinical studies-when experimental new agents go into humans for the first time-is of greatest interest and excitement. Although in vitro and animal studies are essential in early stages, we continue to appreciate that Alexander Pope had it right centuries ago when he wrote that "the proper study of mankind is man," (scientifically, maybe not politically correct). Current efforts to use microdosing studies to obtain in-human data earlier in the development pathway are especially intriguing."

An active member of ASCPT since 2001, Dr. Shapiro believes that "clinical pharmacology permeates much of medicine, yet it is not always recognized as a distinct entity. The Society brings like-minded individuals together in a single forum. This includes both the Annual Meeting and the Journal. It is the only meeting I attend that is devoted to the central issues of clinical pharmacology, and that is attended by academic, industry and government scientists. Cutting-edge methods, regulatory changes, training programs and more are featured."

Thank you, Dr. Shapiro, for your valuable leadership and your continued commitment to ASCPT and the discipline of clinical pharmacology!
