Barry Mangum, PharmD

The ASCPT Member of the Month is a forum to recognize and thank a member of ASCPT who has supported the Society's endeavors. Each month on its web site, ASCPT highlights one member who has gone above and beyond the call of duty! We also highlight the Member of the Month, along with two other members, in each issue of Clinical Pharmacology & Therapeutics. We hope you will enjoy learning about fellow members and as always, encourage your participation in Society events and activities.
ASCPT is proud to recognize Dr. Barry Mangum as the May Member of the Month.
Dr. Mangum is an Associate Clinical Professor in the Clinical Pharmacology Department at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, NC. He is the Chair of the ASCPT Government Affairs Committee and an Editorial Board Member for Clinical Pharmacology & Therapeutics. He also served on the Scientific Program Committee for this year's Annual Meeting.
He credits ASCPT as the "vital instrument in 'connecting all of the dots' to my colleagues. Through making new relationships or renewing old ones, I find ASCPT pivotal in my career mission. Without ASCPT I could not have forged these relationships nationally and internationally. All aspects of drug development are covered and explored within the confines of the ASCPT structure and this is not measurable in dollars."
Since graduating from the Medical University of South Carolina in 1981, Dr. Mangum has designed and implemented global clinical research programs in over 35 countries for 30 multinational pharmaceutical companies. He has over 16 years of experience with Phase I-IV clinical trails in over 40 clinical programs.
In addition to his service to ASCPT, Dr. Mangum is an Executive Committee Member of CAPTN, whose goal is to develop and share knowledge that improves the care of pediatric patients through innovative clinical research. Dr. Mangum co-founded NeoFax, a program designed to help clinicians accurately measure drug dose for infants, "to help reduce drug dosing and nutritional errors in the difficult-to-treat pediatric population."
Dr. Mangum is dedicated to what he feels is the "most interesting and important areas of clinical pharmacology: pediatric early phase discovery. There are so many unknowns in this area that we are discovering daily that make our mission so important. As a faculty member at Duke University, I see new discoveries weekly in areas that will enhance children's lives forever. By being a contributor to this effort my job is exceedingly gratifying. Thus clinical pharmacology is about increasing our knowledge of medicines to treat and possibly cure diseases in children globally."
Thank you, Dr. Mangum, for your valuable leadership and continued commitment to ASCPT and the discipline of clinical pharmacology!
