ASCPT Member of the Month
The ASCPT Member of the Month is a forum to recognize and thank a member of ASCPT who has supported the Society's endeavors. Each month on its web site, ASCPT highlights one member who has gone above and beyond the call of duty! We also highlight the Member of the Month, along with two other members, in each issue of Clinical Pharmacology & Therapeutics. We hope you will enjoy learning about fellow members and as always, encourage your participation in Society events and activities. ASCPT is proud to recognize Dr. Dhanesh Gupta as the June Member of the Month. Dr. Gupta, MD, is the Director of Neurosurgical Anesthesiology Research and Associate Professor of Anesthesiology & Neurological Surgery at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago, IL. He graduated from Northwestern University with an undergraduate degree in biomedical engineering and continued on to receive his medical degree. One of the most exciting areas in clinical pharmacology for Dr. Gupta is the area of pain: “Pain is one of the health care issues that continues to be a medical, social, and economic problem. I believe that clinical pharmacology will play a leading role in the next several years as we tackle pain from several fronts--the rational dosing (PKPD based) of opioids to provide efficient and consistent relief to the opioid naive and the opioid tolerant patient; the development of new opioids that don't have the abuse potential and street value that is prevents the wider use of opioid analgesics; the development of non-opioid alternatives and/or adjuncts, especially for the treatment of neuropathic pain and pain due to malignancy; and understanding the biology underlying development of breakthrough pain, the development of opioid tolerance, and the development of addiction. Pain is health problem that will depend on the entire DDRU continuum in order to be effectively treated.” He serves as a reviewer for Clinical Pharmacology & Therapeutics and as a member of the Scientific Program Committee. For the 2008 CPT issue on Anesthesiology, Dr. Gupta served as a guest editor with Drs. Arthur Atkinson and Michael Avram. He also served as Chair for the Oral Session on Inflammatory Mediators at the 2009 ASCPT Annual Meeting.
