ASCPT Member of the Month

Member of the Month: Craig W. Hendrix
Craig W. Hendrix, MD

The ASCPT Member of the Month—a forum to recognize and thank a member of ASCPT who has supported the Society's endeavors. Each month ASCPT highlights ONE member who has gone above and beyond the call of duty. We hope you enjoy learning about your fellow members and always encourage your participation in Society events and activities.

ASCPT is proud to recognize Craig W. Hendrix, MD, as Member of the Month for July, 2006. Dr. Hendrix has been an active member of ASCPT since 1997.

Dr. Hendrix is an Associate Professor of Medicine, Pharmacology and Molecular Sciences, and Epidemiology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland.

Despite a busy schedule at Johns Hopkins, Dr. Hendrix also serves ASCPT as Chair of the Infectious Diseases and Antimicrobial Agents (INF) Section and as a member of the Leadership Committee for the Coordinating Committee on Scientific Sections. He is also a member of the Pharmacokinetics and Drug Metabolism (PHK) Section and of the Scientific Program Committee.

To Dr. Hendrix, one of the most interesting and exciting aspects of clinical pharmacology is the duo of clinical trial simulation and phase 0 clinical studies because of their potential for dramatic impact on both ends of the clinical drug development spectrum.

"While incremental, as most normal science is, they are intellectually appealing, evolutionary steps that are needed to improve the science and efficiency of drug development. For the clinical pharmacologist, these fields are rich in their dependence on many of the sub-disciplines within clinical pharmacology, take advantage of technological advances in non-clinical sciences, and have the potential to provide a much needed stimulus for rejuvenating a languishing drug development enterprise in the academy, industry, and government".

Membership in ASCPT and attendance at the Annual Meeting provides Dr. Hendrix "... a place where I can meet and talk with like-minded scientists who appreciate the unique perspective and skill set that clinical pharmacologists bring to drug development and medical practice. At annual meetings and in the context of other Society work throughout the year, these colleagues, ordinarily scattered about in small, isolated pockets across the landscape, are concentrated in a way that more effectively provides encouragement for my own career, ideas for solving scientific problems, and opportunities to learn and to teach among colleagues with shared interests".

Dr. Hendrix also notes, "Participation in the work of the Society beyond the annual meeting means that I meet new colleagues with their own unique and informative career stories, trainees with a wonderfully restorative passion for some scientific challenge, and old friends that cannot otherwise make the time for each other."

Thank you, Dr. Hendrix, for your enthusiasm and your valuable leadership in ASCPT and the discipline of clinical pharmacology!
