ASCPT Member of the Month

Member of the Month: Deanna Kroetz
Deanna Kroetz, PhD

The ASCPT Member of the Month—a forum to recognize and thank a member of ASCPT who has supported the Society's endeavors. Each month ASCPT highlights ONE member who has gone above and beyond the call of duty. We hope you enjoy learning about your fellow members and always encourage your participation in Society events and activities.

ASCPT is proud to recognize Deanna Kroetz, PhD, as Member of the Month for August, 2006.

Dr. Kroetz has been an active member of ASCPT for over 12 years and has served in a variety of important leadership roles with the Society. Currently, Dr. Kroetz is Chair of the Editorial Committee, overseeing the journal Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics through exciting and important changes. Dr. Kroetz is also Vice-Chair of the Committee on Coordination of Scientific Sections (CCSS), and has served as a member of ASCPT's Strategic Planning Task Force and as Chair of the Pharmacogenetics and Molecular Pharmacology scientific section.

In a recent interview, Dr. Kroetz told ASCPT, "This is an exciting time to be a clinical pharmacologist with the recognition by NIH and the FDA of the importance of translational research in promoting the development of safe and effective medications. The broad diversity of expertise within the field means that as a profession we can contribute along the entire drug development pipeline from discovery to utilization."

"One exciting example is pharmacogenetics. The application of genetics to the understanding of variability in drug response and toxicity can aid in a more rational choice of drug or treatment regimen, but the knowledge gained from these studies also provides information about drug action that can be applied to the design of novel pharmacological agents with more desired properties."

She added, "ASCPT is a unique organization whose members come from diverse backgrounds. My volunteer work at ASCPT has led to the development of rich professional relationships which contribute to my research goals. It has also given me the opportunity to more clearly understand how the profession is perceived throughout the scientific and medical communities and makes me realize the important job we all have in promoting the discipline.

Dr. Kroetz is an Associate Professor of Biopharmaceutical Sciences and Pharmaceutical Chemistry at the University of California, San Francisco.
