Dr. Derendorf

The ASCPT Member of the Month is a forum to recognize and thank a member of ASCPT who has supported the Society's endeavors. Each month on its web site, ASCPT highlights one member who has gone above and beyond the call of duty! We also highlight the Member of the Month, along with two other members, in each issue of Clinical Pharmacology & Therapeutics. We hope you will enjoy learning about fellow members and as always, encourage your participation in Society events and activities.
ASCPT is proud to recognize Dr. Derendorf as the August Member of the Month.
Dr. Derendorf is a Distinguished Professor and Chairman of the Department of Pharmaceutics at the University of Florida College of Pharmacy in Gainesville, FL. He has been a member of ASCPT for over 25 years.
He has published over 330 scientific publications and six textbooks in English and German. In looking at the future of the discipline, he identifies the current climate: “our field is called upon by the general society to find ways to facilitate the availability of innovative, efficacious and safe new medicines at an affordable cost. In some cases, public expectations have become unrealistic and proper education is needed. The current picture is not pretty -- the pharmaceutical industry is currently undergoing some down-sizing and is not always presented in the media in the most positive light. Many universities are facing drastic budget cuts, and Clinical Pharmacology Training Programs have become an exception for most medical schools. The FDA is under criticism from patients, advocacy groups and Congress for both not approving fast enough or approving too early. Drug therapy is becoming more complex as we learn new things about our medicines and identify ways to use them optimally for each individual patient.”
In order to meet these challenges, he encourages colleagues to “combine our strengths and work together. I am confident that within our field we have the intellectual horsepower to forge ahead and meet the challenge as pivotal players to positively impact drug therapy.”
Thank you, Dr. Derendorf, for your valuable leadership and continued commitment to ASCPT and the discipline of clinical pharmacology!
