The ASCPT Member of the Month is a forum to recognize and thank a member of ASCPT who has supported the Society's endeavors. Each month on its web site, ASCPT highlights one member who has gone above and beyond the call of duty! We also highlight the Member of the Month, along with two other members, in each issue of Clinical Pharmacology & Therapeutics. We hope you will enjoy learning about fellow members and as always, encourage your participation in Society events and activities.

ASCPT is proud to recognize Dr. Nancy J. Brown as the September 2009 Member of the Month. 

Dr. Brown is the Division Chief of Clinical Pharmacology at the Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, TN. After joining the Society in October 2007, Dr. Brown credits Jason Morrow for urging her to become more involved. She appreciates ASCPT's "emphasis on training new clinical pharmacologists."

As for the future of clinical pharmacology, she believes that it is in personalized medicine: "in ten years, we will be closer to selecting medications and doses based on an individual's genetic and environmental profile. We will practice evidence-based medicine, but it will not be "one-size-fits-all" medicine" At Vanderbilt, Dr. Brown's research focuses "on the cardioprotective effects of bradykinin and on the interaction of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone and fibrinolytic systems in humans."

She says that the most interesting thing about clinical pharmacology is the "development of medications from antibiotics, to anti-hypertensives, and now preventive therapies, [which] has had an enormous impact on health in this country and across the world. There are very few areas of medicine where one can hope to have as much impact as in the development and optimization of medicines."
