ASCPT Member of the Month

Member of the Month:
John A. Wagner, MD, PhD

The ASCPT Member of the Month is a forum to recognize and thank a member of ASCPT who has supported the Society's endeavors. Each month on its web site, ASCPT highlights one member who has gone above and beyond the call of duty! We also highlight the Member of the Month, along with two other members, in each issue of Clinical Pharmacology & Therapeutics. We hope you will enjoy learning about fellow members and as always, encourage your participation in Society events and activities.

ASCPT is proud to recognize John Wagner as the October Member of the Month. Dr. Wagner received his PhD in neuroscience from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 1987 and went on complete his MD at Stanford University. His research during his fellowship was mainly focused on cystic fibrosis. His current research focuses on translational medicine and biomarkers. Dr. Wagner has been a member of ASCPT since 2000 and will be a guest editor for the February 2008 issue of CPT.

Because of the multidisciplinary nature of the field of clinical pharmacology, spanning the continuum of drug discovery, development, regulation and utilization, Dr. Wagner finds it difficult to pinpoint just one interesting or exciting aspect of the field. "The most interesting and exciting areas in clinical pharmacology are the burgeoning area of biomarkers, personalized medicine, quantitative clinical pharmacology/modeling and simulation, innovative approaches to drug development, and translational medicine." He believes the rapid progress and innovation make these areas exciting. "For example, for biomarkers, there is an explosion in biomarker discovery as well as innovative approaches to biomarker identification and qualification including the recently launched Foundation for the National Institutes of Health Biomarkers Consortium."

He attributes ASCPT's Annual Meeting with giving him the opportunity to network and learn more about this multidisciplinary field: "ASCPT provides the gold standard for the field, is a major driver of my professional identity within Clinical Pharmacology, and impacts scientific and clinical educational initiatives that are critical to the future of our organization."

Thank you, Dr. Wagner, for your valuable leadership and your continued commitment to ASCPT and the discipline of clinical pharmacology!
