The ASCPT Member of the Month is a forum to recognize and thank a member of ASCPT who has supported the Society's endeavors. Each month on its web site, ASCPT highlights one member who has gone above and beyond the call of duty! We also highlight the Member of the Month, along with two other members, in each issue of Clinical Pharmacology & Therapeutics. We hope you will enjoy learning about fellow members and as always, encourage your participation in Society events and activities.
ASCPT is proud to recognize Dr. Hendrik Jan Guchelaar as the October 2009 Member of the Month.
Dr. Guchelaar is the chair of the Department of Clinical Pharmacy & Toxicology at Leiden University Medical Centre and a professor of Clinical Pharmacy in the School of Medicine at the University of Leiden in Leiden, Netherlands. He has also served as a Professor of Clinical Pharmacy at the Faculty of Science and Director of the Leiden Center for Translational Drug Discovery and Development (LCTD3), Leiden-Amsterdam Center for Drug Research (LACDR) in Leiden and is a board member of the Dutch Society of Clinical Pharmacology and Biopharmacy.
At the 2009 ASCPT Annual Meeting, Dr. Guchelaar led a Meet the Expert session entitled “Pharmacogenetics: Targeting the Tumor or Targeting the Patient?” to discuss innovations in pharmacogenetics and the treatment of patients. He has since been appointed to the Scientific Program Committee for the upcoming Annual Meeting in Atlanta, Georgia.
Dr. Guchelaar highly appreciates ASCPT for its role as the "global platform for drug researchers.” According to Dr. Guchelaar, "both the internationally oriented meetings and the Society’s excellent journal are indispensable for exchanging science in clinical pharmacology research and for maintaining a close contact with colleagues from the international pharmacology community. It is really exciting to be part of that community.”
Dr. Guchelaar is highly dedicated to the study of drug response and is passionate about all issues relating to the high interpatient variability of drug response. “In fact,” he says, “this research question is as old as the science of clinical pharmacology itself! Why do patients respond so differently after taking a drug in a certain dose? If we would understand this phenomena, we could really make pharmacotherapy much more effective, and, not unimportantly, truly safe. In this era of technological advancement it is a privilege to be active in this field.”
Dr. Guchelaar shares this wish for the future: “I hope that clinical pharmacology will be able to really introduce personalized medicine in the next ten years.
