ASCPT Member of the Month

Member of the Month: Dr. Jane Freedman

The ASCPT Member of the Month—a forum to recognize and thank a member of ASCPT who has supported the Society's endeavors. Each month ASCPT highlights ONE member who has gone above and beyond the call of duty! We hope you enjoy learning about your fellow members and always encourage your participation in Society events and activities.

ASCPT is proud to recognize Dr. Jane Freedman as the November Member of the Month. Dr. Freedman has been an active member of ASCPT since joining in 1998. She is past Chair of the Cardiovascular and Pulmonary (CAR) Scientific Section. She has also lent her expertise to ASCPT on a variety of clinical pharmacological issues.

Dr. Freedman is an Associate Professor of Medicine and Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics at Boston University School of Medicine. Dr. Freedman's research on cardiovascular disease is primarily focused on platelet regulation and thrombosis as it impacts coronary disease.

Dr. Freedman cites the recent development and utilization of high throughput methodologies in understanding clinical pharmacology as one of the most exciting advancements in clinical pharmacology, "The use of microarrays (DNA), metabolomic, proteomic, and genetic screening have become state of the art techniques for high throughput comprehensive analysis of thousand of genes, proteins, and genetic variants. Interest is rapidly growing in the application of these techniques and how they may interface with pharmacogenomics in order to characterize and validate new therapeutic targets, their mechanism of action, metabolic pathways, and unwanted secondary effects."

Dr. Freedman has found her ASCPT membership invaluable in many ways, "The annual meeting has become an event where I can interact with peers, friends, past and current colleagues while learning about the latest in diverse areas of clinical pharmacology. A unique aspect of the society is its bridge between basic development and mechanism with clinical outcomes and application. Specifically, interacting with colleagues at the meeting allows me to share the perspective that is unique to clinical pharmacologists. The society's updates and resources throughout the year have allowed these interactions to continue."

Dr. Freedman, thank you for your valuable leadership and your commitment to ASCPT and the discipline of clinical pharmacology!
