Mayo Clinic Associate Professor and Consultant Arshad Jahangir to Receive William B. Abrams Award in Geriatric Clinical Pharmacology

Will Honor Jahangir at its Annual Meeting in Anaheim

(Alexandria, VA) – American Society for Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics (ASCPT) has selected Arshad Jahangir, MD of the Mayo Clinic, to receive its 2007 William B. Abrams Award in Geriatric Clinical Pharmacology. The award will be presented on Wednesday, March 21, 2007, during the ASCPT annual meeting in Anaheim, California.

Dr. Jahangir received his Medical Degree from the Dow Medical College, University of Karachi, Pakistan. He is currently an Associate Professor of Medicine and Consultant at the Mayo Clinic. In 2005, Dr. Jahangir was Board Certified in Clinical Pharmacology by the American Board of Clinical Pharmacology.

Dr. Jahangir has made great contributions to the field of Geriatric Clinical Pharmacology through his research aimed at gaining insight into the cellular, molecular and genetic basis of cardiac derangement that occurs with normal aging and disease processes and to develop novel therapeutic strategies in the treatment of disabling cardiac disorders in the elderly.

His research is currently being funded by the National Institute of Health with grants from the National Institute on Aging and the National Center of the American Heart Association. He is a recipient of the Society of Geriatric Cardiology Award in Basic Sciences and the Karis Award from Saint Mary's Hospital. Dr. Jahangir has been asked to review scientific grants for the National Institutes of Health, Ministry of Health of the Czech Republic and the Nemours Foundation.

The William B. Abrams Award in Geriatric Clinical Pharmacology honors young investigators in the field of geriatric clinical pharmacology who are making outstanding contributions to the field. The award was established by Dr. William B. Abrams with support from the Merck Company Foundation. Dr. Abrams was president of ASCPT during 1975-76 and had an illustrious career in the pharmaceutical industry, primarily at Merck Research Laboratories.
