Food and Drug Administration Director Lawrence J. Lesko To Receive Rawls-Palmer Progress in Medicine Award
American Society for Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics
Will Honor Lesko at its Annual Meeting in Anaheim
(Alexandria, VA) – Lawrence J. Lesko, PhD, has been named the American Society for Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics (ASCPT) 2007 Rawls-Palmer Progress in Medicine Award winner. ASCPT will present the award to Dr. Lesko on Thursday, March 22, 2007 during the Annual Meeting in Anaheim, California. As the Rawls-Palmer awardee, Dr. Lesko will present a lecture entitled, "Clinical Pharmacology at FDA - Improving the Scientific Basis of Drug Development and Regulation."
Dr. Lesko earned his B.S. and PhD at Temple University in Philadelphia. Prior to joining the FDA, Dr. Lesko was a faculty member is academia for over fifteen years, most recently at the University of Maryland. He directed the clinical pharmacology laboratory at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center, and was Vice-President of PharmaKinetics Laboratories, a Baltimore-based contract research organization. He is an Adjunct Professor at the University of Florida and at the University of Southern California in the Colleges of Pharmacy.
The main focus of Dr. Lesko's office is the translational analysis of dose-response and PK-PD data for the purposes of optimizing dosing and the benefit/risk ratio of FDA-approved drugs. Dr. Lesko is an American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientist (AAPS) Fellow and is Board Certified in Clinical Pharmacology by the American Board of Clinical Pharmacology. He also served as President of the American College of Clinical Pharmacology (2004-2006).
Dr. Lesko has served ASCPT in a number of ways including as a reviewer for Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics, chair of the Drug Development and Regulatory Science Section and as a member of the board of directors.
The Rawls-Palmer Progress in Medicine Award recognizes a clinical pharmacologist for significant contributions to drug investigation that incorporate the efforts of modern drug research in the care of patients. It was established by Dr. W. B. Rawls to further his commitment to continuing medical education and its impact on patient care.
