Merck Vice President Richard J. Hargreaves to Receive Gary Neil Prize for Innovation in Drug Development

Will Honor Hargreaves at its Annual Meeting in Anaheim
(Alexandria, VA) – Richard J. Hargreaves, PhD has been selected by the American Society for Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics (ASCPT) to receive its 2007 Gary Neil Prize for Innovation in Drug Development. Dr. Hargreaves will receive the award on Wednesday, March 21, 2007, during the ASCPT Annual Meeting in Anaheim, California.
Dr. Hargreaves trained at Chelsea College, University of London in the United Kingdom where her obtained a first class honors degree in pharmacology. After completing his doctorate in physiology at Kings College, London University he joined Merck's Neuroscience Research Center in Harlow, UK.
Since joining Merck, he has occupied positions of increasing seniority in research. In 1999 moved to the United States to establish and lead a worldwide imaging research strategy. Since that time he has built a global multimodality imaging group that supports decision making in drug discovery and development across Merck's key therapeutic areas. He led discovery biology teams that contributed to the development of Maxalt for the treatment of migraines and Emend and fosaprepitant, novel agents that advance the protective pharmacotherapy of acute and delayed chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting and post-operative nausea and vomiting.
Dr. Hargreaves is a member of the British Pharmacological Society, The Academy of Molecular Imaging, The Society of Molecular Imaging and the Society of Non-invasive Imaging. He has over 100 peer-reviewed publications in the field of basic pharmacology and translational medicine. In 2001 he became an Honorary Member of the American Headache Society and was also honored by the National Headache Foundation with their Partners in Excellence Award.
The Gary Neil Prize for Innovation in Drug Development aims to stimulate the application of innovative science to clinical drug development by recognizing outstanding individuals or teams who are leaders in this area. The prize was established to honor Gary Neil, PhD, former head of worldwide research and development at Wyeth-Ayerst.
