VANDERBILT UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF MEDICINE PROFESSOR DAN M. RODEN, MD, TO RECEIVE RAWLS-PALMER PROGRESS IN MEDICINE AWARD
American Society for Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics
Will Honor Dr. Roden at its 2008 Annual Meeting in Orlando
(Alexandria, VA) –Dan M. Roden, MD, has been named the American Society for Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics (ASCPT) 2008 Rawls-Palmer Progress in Medicine Award recipient. The Rawls-Palmer Progress in Medicine Award recognizes a clinical pharmacologist for significant contributions to drug investigation that incorporate the efforts of modern drug research in the patient care. Dr. W. B. Rawls established the Rawls-Palmer Progress in Medicine Award broaden his commitment to continuing medical education and its impact on patient care.
ASCPT will present the award to Dr. Roden on Friday, April 4, 2008, during its Annual Meeting in Orlando, Florida. As the Rawls-Palmer awardee, Dr. Roden will present a lecture entitled "Defining clinical pharmacology: genes and environment."
Dr. Roden earned his BSc and MD from McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. He completed his residency in internal medicine at the Royal Victoria Hospital. After completing his fellowship at Vanderbilt University, he became an Assistant Professor of Clinical Pharmacology at the University. He has held a variety of teaching positions within the University throughout his career and is currently Director of the John Oates Institute for Experimental Therapeutics, William Stokes Professor of Experimental Therapeutics, and Assistant Vice-Chancellor for Personalized Medicine at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine.
ASCPT first honored Dr. Roden in 1992 for his research in cardiovascular therapeutics by awarding him the Leon I. Goldberg Young Investigator Award, which the Society presents annually to a young scientist for early accomplishments in his or her career.
Dr. Roden's notable research includes the identification of a number of drugs with negative side effects related to heart arrhythmia, which resulted in their removal from the market.
Dr. Roden achieved his Board Certification from the American Board of Clinical Pharmacology (ABCP) in 1993 and is currently a member of the ABCP Board. He is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians, the American College of Cardiology, the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, and the American Heart Association.
Dr. Roden has served ASCPT as a member of the Board of Directors and as Vice President of the Society in 1997. He was Chair of the Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Scientific Section and is a reviewer for Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics.
