What are you looking forward to as the new vice chair of the Biologics Community?
I am honored to be serving as one of the new Co-Vice Chairs of the Biologics Community. I am looking forward to continuing the exciting work of all of the previous Chairs and Vice Chairs. In addition, I want to help build an even stronger Biologics Steering Committee, by creating a collaborative environment that is welcoming to new as well as established colleagues. Lastly, I want to help build an overall stronger ASCPT by bringing forward exciting webinar topics that will engage the wider clinical pharmacology community.

What is the most important leadership lesson you have learned the hard way?
There are many lessons I am still learning and, unfortunately, the most valuable lessons are the hard ones. One lesson I have been learning of late is the importance of being humble. I think everyone can agree that we do not know everything. Having humility allows us to learn from others, regardless of who they are. Humility also helps us win people over. Many times, it can be difficult to convince team members, even when you are confident you are correct. Engaging in conversation from a position of humility will make it far more likely for team members to see things from your perspective, and vice versa. I would imagine that the lesson of humility becomes more and more difficult to learn as people develop seniority in their careers, so it is important to learn this lesson early!

When you aren’t working, how do you spend your free time?
I am an avid practitioner of Brazilian jiujitsu and a huge fan of mixed martial arts. It is my number one stress reliever, and most evenings you will find me training at the gym. The problem-solving aspects of Brazilian jiujitsu, the use of biomechanics, as well as the ability for “brain to beat brawn,” makes this sport immensely fun and highly addicting!

How do you keep focused and motivated?
I often look to my professional mentors and those more senior in their careers, to put into perspective how much more I need to develop to reach where they are. This inspires me to learn more and to work harder, in order to reach that goal.

In addition, a supportive work environment (a great manager, as well as a great department) keeps me focused, allowing me to concentrate on my work and skip the drama.

Joseph has been a member of ASCPT since 2016.
