Daniele Ouellet, PhD, Global Head Clinical Pharmacology and Pharmacometrics, Johnson & Johnson, Spring House, Pennsylvania

What professional accomplishment are you most proud of?
I was working on a first‐in‐human study in patients with metastatic melanoma at a time when there were no treatment options. We started to see amazing responses, and many of these patients were feeling better. I could see a direct impact of the work I was doing on study design and dose selection directly on someone’s life.

What is the most important leadership lesson you have learned the hard way?
Communicate, communicate, communicate. To get alignment and make changes, communication up, down, across, is the more important lesson.

When you aren’t working, how do you spend your free time.
When I’m not working, I play tennis. I enjoy reading. I also drive down 95 to visit my husband.

How do you keep focused and motivated?
Taking my 10,000 steps a day . . . I do a lot of good thinking while walking and get very excited about some ideas (unfortunately they are not all good).

What was your childhood dream job?
Years later, I read something I had written in 6th grade about my career path which included becoming a doctor and publishing my research. The funny thing is that I never thought of that consciously when I entered Pharmacy school, and kept going to the graduate program. Maybe my 12‐year‐old self knew something I did not know.

Dr. Ouellet has been a member of ASCPT since 1998.
