What was your favorite part of attending the Annual Meeting?
My favorite part of the event was seeing all the amazing work being presented by talented individuals in the field of clinical pharmacology and therapeutics. It was truly inspiring to see so many innovative and cutting-edge ideas being shared. On a personal note, I was thrilled to receive both a Presidential Trainee Award and a blue ribbon for a highest scoring abstract. It was an honor to be recognized for my work, and I am grateful for the support and encouragement of my colleagues and mentors.

Why did you submit your abstract to the ASCPT 2023 Annual Meeting?
I submitted my abstract to the ASCPT 2023 Annual Meeting because it provided a great opportunity to share my research and contribute to the broader conversation on pharmacology and clinical therapeutics. However, I must admit that I was initially hesitant to submit my work because I lacked the confidence that my work met the high standard of such a prestigious event with such a distinguished audience. Fortunately, I was lucky enough to have a supportive mentor, Dr D.J. Murry, who recognized the value of my research and encouraged me to submit my abstract. With his guidance, I was able to gain the confidence needed to put myself out there and submit my work to ASCPT. This opportunity to share my research helped me grow and develop as a researcher and to contribute to the wider conversation on the future of pharmacology and clinical therapeutics.

Who has inspired you in your career?
Dr D.J. Murry is an exceptional and respected researcher in the field of pharmacology. His compassionate leadership style sets him apart, as he goes above and beyond to help colleagues and fosters a culture of collaboration. Watching Dr Murry in action has inspired me to always strive for excellence in my work, all while keeping the importance of scientific research in mind and prioritizing positive relationships built on kindness and respect.

Do you have a favorite tip or trick for clinical practice or research that you want to share with fellow members?
A tip that I learned from another mentor of mine, Dr Yashpal, which is to avoid repeating a failed experiment on a Friday afternoon. Instead, it's better to go home, spend quality time with loved ones, and enjoy the weekend. Return to work on Monday with a refreshed mind and renewed focus to tackle the experiment again. This allows for a clear and creative approach, and you might even come up with new ideas or strategies to improve the outcome.

When you aren't working, how do you spend your free time?
In my free time, I like to prioritize my physical and mental health by practicing yoga and meditation. Additionally, I enjoy golfing and exploring the outdoors. These activities help me recharge and stay balanced in both my personal and professional life.

How do you keep focused and motivated?
I stay focused and motivated because my passion for science provides me with a sense of purpose in life. Also, taking care of my physical and mental health through yoga and leaning on my support system during challenges helps me maintain motivation. Additionally, I prioritize good communication with my mentors and superiors to stay on track. This combination of self-care, support, and a love for my work keeps me consistently driven and focused.

What was your childhood dream job?
My childhood dream job was to become a physician. I remember going around calling myself “Dr Wafaa” when I was young. Although I did not end up pursuing that exact career path, I am currently working towards completing my doctorate degree and hopefully I will become “Dr Wafaa” by the end of it.

What's one thing people would be surprised to know about you?
I am an antiquarian science book collector. I love collecting them as a way to appreciate the work of past scientists and preserve their valuable contributions to the field.

Wafaa has been a member of ASCPT since 2019.
