How do you keep focused and motivated?
I have struggled with self-doubt for quite some time, making it challenging to keep focused and motivated. Thankfully, the consistent support from those around me has played a pivotal role in helping me regain confidence. Now, with their belief in me, I'm on a journey to embrace love – for myself, for others, and for the world. It is a belief in the potential for a better version of myself and the people around me, contributing to a better world. I believe that this love can make me better, help influence those around me positively, and ultimately help me contribute to making the world a better place.
Who has inspired you in your career?
Dr Eun Kyoung (Christina) Chung has been my advisor since I was a pharmacy student, and her influence on my career has been profound. She is an expert in infectious disease and ICU patient care as a pharmacist, as well as an expert in PopPK modeling as a pharmacometrician. Under her guidance, I have been able to leverage my clinical experience in ICU rounding to address clinically important questions through QSP modeling. Dr Chung has provided me with solid support and exposure to various modeling methods such as PopPK, PBPK, and QSP. Thanks to her mentorship, I have been recognized by both pharmacometricians and clinicians.
What is your favorite Society memory?
One of my favorite memories of being part of ASCPT was attending the networking breakfast during the ASCPT 2023 Annual Meeting. As an early career professional, it was incredibly valuable to engage with the Systems Pharmacology (SP) Community leadership team and other professionals in the SP Community. I made sure to listen and participate in conversations actively.
Looking back at my journey, it is clear that my expertise in QSP modeling has significantly evolved. If given the chance to participate in a similar networking session now, I am confident that my enriched modeling experience would contribute to even more impactful and insightful discussions.
When you are not working, how do you spend your free time?
I love playing the drums and have been doing it for over a decade. Drumming shares similarities with research work. Both drumming and research require hard work and focus on the basics for improvement. Sometimes progress can be slow, but sudden leaps forward happen unexpectedly. However, drumming also has the opposite properties compared with research. As a researcher, my mind is often occupied with planning the future trajectory of my research and career. But when I am behind the drum kit, I can immerse myself fully in the music, experiencing being in the moment.
Looking ahead, I hold the hope of forming a rock or jazz band with ASCPT members in the future, allowing us to blend our shared love for music with our professional interests.
Dr Kim has been a member of ASCPT since 2022.
