What does being a 2024 Presidential Trainee mean to you?
I think of being a 2024 Presidential Trainee as a “name tag” that is slightly larger and more visible that could be helpful to interact with the world, rather than a report card that shows my value. Thanks to this important opportunity, other people remembered me and my work a little better, better opportunities for interaction arose, and most importantly, my self-esteem increased. I know that people's expectations of me and for me have become a little higher. This may be a bit burdensome, but if it makes me live more intentionally, it can also be a good motivation.
Why did you submit an abstract for the ASCPT 2024 Annual Meeting?
Fortunately, I had an opportunity to join Takeda as a summer intern last year. Throughout the internship, I made sure not to spend any of my days meaninglessly because I did not want to waste time and opportunities for challenges provided by my academic mentor and my alma mater. Submitting two abstracts for ASCPT 2024 was the way I could show the world what I accomplished in about 3 months' time.
What has been the greatest challenge in your career?
Deciding the transition from my previous role as a DMPK scientist in a pharmaceutical company back to student mode was a huge decision and a meaningful point of inflection in my life. I came to the United States and started my PhD studies using English rather than my mother tongue—marking the beginning of a lifetime of challenge. Despite the initial hurdles, I am very fortunate to have great mentors and colleagues who have supported me along the way. I am delighted to dive into the field of clinical pharmacology and pharmacometrics. The chance not only enhances my previous knowledge and experiences but also offers opportunities for integration and application.
Who has inspired you in your career?
I have found inspiration and gained valuable insights from my academic mentor, Professor Bernd Meibohm, with regard to becoming a purpose-driven person and how that behavior can allow me to make a meaningful difference in my research plan and achievement. He also consistently shares his experiences and emphasizes the significance of embracing a transformative mindset with the boundless possibilities that come with it.
What was your childhood dream job?
I dreamed of any kind of job helping and treating people for severe injuries, such as orthopedic surgeon, but eventually, I dreamed of also being a devoted husband and father to my children. While there is no standard for definition, there are people who succeed in both their professional and personal lives. Every day, I strive to become just such a person. In the distant future when I reach the end of my life, I will know if I have achieved my dreams when my children say “you have been a five-star daddy.” I need to live more seriously to achieve my on-going dream job.
