Emily Cicali, PharmD, Clinical Assistant Professor, University of Florida, Ocala, Florida

Who has inspired you in your career?
Dr. Julie Johnson has always been an inspiration to me as a leader in pharmacogenetics implementation. Specifically, it was her work that encouraged me to learn about pharmacogenetics in pharmacy school and inspired me to specialize in pharmacogenetics. At an ASCPT Annual Meeting, I was fortunate to meet her in person and make a connection. Then I came to University of Florida to complete a Fellowship under her supervision. Dr. Johnson continues to inspire me and is a valuable mentor to me to this day.

When you aren’t working, how do you spend your free time?
Most of my free time is spent being active. I love to work out at my cross‐fit gym, explore trails at state parks, take my own dogs or my local shelter dogs out for walks, and kayak at the local springs. I also love to bake and make homemade pasta with my husband.

Do you have a favorite tip or trick for clinical practice or research that you want to share with fellow members?
For clinical practice in a multidisciplinary team, physically being seen is important. For me as a pharmacist, I depend on physicians to refer patients to my pharmacogenetics clinic; it is imperative that they know who I am. When they see me they are reminded of the service I provide, which results in more referrals. I constantly make sure when I am at my clinical practice site to make contact with all of the physicians. I also regularly get on the agenda at their meetings to provide updates on the clinic and remind them about the service and how to refer.

What was your childhood dream job?
I wanted to be an airplane pilot, but I got my first pair of glasses in first grade and learned sometime shortly after that I would need perfect vision to fly. Vision requirements may have now changed, but I would certainly not want the responsibility of flying a plane now!

Dr. Cicali has been a member of ASCPT since 2015.
