What excites you about serving in your role as the Oncology (ONC) Community Co-Vice Chair?
I find serving as the ASCPT Oncology (ONC) Community Co-Vice Chair exciting for several reasons. Firstly, it is a great opportunity to collaborate with bright scientists in a scientific, professional, and personal capacity. Since starting university, the field of oncology has wholly captivated me. So, naturally, working with scientists and clinicians in this space is an incredible privilege. Secondly, this position gives me the opportunity to observe closely and learn from the chair and other ASCPT leaders while contributing meaningfully to the committee's scientific and professional goals. Furthermore, this role offers a chance to network with experts and thought leaders in the field which can be invaluable for both personal and professional growth. Overall, I see this position as an exciting opportunity to make a difference, connect with like-minded individuals, and contribute to the growth and development of the ONC Community and ASCPT.

What professional accomplishment are you most proud of?
Surprisingly, the accomplishment I am most proud of took place early in my life, prior to attending university. When I was 14 years old, my family immigrated to the United States from Egypt. A year later, I started preparing for my SAT. Naturally, my English proficiency was very limited and English accounted for two-thirds of the exam. Fortunately, one can retake the exam three times. Through long excruciating hours of studying and practicing, I was able to improve by 60% compared to my first practice exam and 20% compared to my first attempt. I always mention this as the accomplishment I am most proud of because it inspires me to be diligent and bold despite any odds and setbacks.

Who has inspired you in your career?
My main inspiration is my father. Prior to moving to the states, he was a successful anesthesiologist with about 20 years of experience. After moving, he completed his equivalency exams and applied to residency in the States. Simultaneously, he worked whatever minimum-wage jobs he could find. Despite completing his equivalency exams and applying to the match multiple times, he was not able to match into any anesthesia residencies. As a physician, he had an opportunity to work in non-clinical settings without completing residency, but he chose to work as a medical technician in the OR to stay close to the field he loves. His passion and commitment to what he does, whether as a physician or a technician, always inspires me to find something I love and to give it my all.

When you are not working, how do you spend your free time?
Outside of work, I like to read, drink coffee, travel, and stay active, preferably outside. When I read, I enjoy grinding some coffee beans and brewing them using my moka pot. My favorite trips include a lot of hiking and I always make sure to buy a bag of coffee beans as a souvenir. And while back home, I enjoy strength training and running trails to prepare for those trips.
