Churni Gupta, PhD, postdoctoral associate, University of Florida, Orlando, Florida

What does being a 2024 presidential trainee mean to you?
I am a mathematician by training. I started working in the field of quantitative pharmacology in 2022. My work being recognized at this level gives me hope and encouragement for the future and a feeling of acceptance.

Who has inspired you in your career?
A lot of people! First and foremost, I have been inspired by my PhD adviser, Maia Martcheva. My current mentors, Stephan Schmidt, Valva Vozmediano, Serge Guzy, and Tomoki Yoneyama are also inspiring. But, the one who is my biggest supporter is my mother.

What has been the greatest challenge in your career?
I have spent the last eight years away from my country and my family. This was especially difficult during the peak pandemic time. My father passed away in 2021, possibly due to COVID, and I could not be there with my family. It is the most difficult thing I have had to recover from.

When you are not working, how do you spend your free time?
I code in my free time. I also enjoy cooking and long drives. Some days I just lie on the floor chilling with my friends and having in-depth conversations.

How do you stay focused and motivated?
Regular therapy is important. My therapist has been instrumental in helping me build good habits like journaling, meditation, and intentional mindfulness.

What was your childhood dream job?
I am literally living my dream. I always wanted to be a scientist and to do meaningful research.

Dr. Gupta has been a member of ASCPT since 2023.
