Jatinder Mukker, PhD, Director Clinical Pharmacology, EMD Serono, Acton, MA

What are you looking forward to in your role as Drug Utilization & Outcomes (DUO) community vice chair?
I am very passionate about Drug Utilization and Outcomes (DUO) research, which is vital for evaluating drug prescribing practices and ensuring safe and effective usage in real-world settings across diverse populations. However, DUO research encounters several challenges, such as collecting patient-level data, ensuring accessibility and transparency of data sources, and addressing variability in data interpretation compared to controlled clinical trials.

As the Vice Chair of the DUO Community, I am eager to lead discussions and foster collaborations among experts from industry, academia, and regulatory agencies to tackle these challenges related to real-world data (RWD) usage. I am also excited about leveraging advanced artificial intelligence and machine learning tools to enhance the accuracy and reliability of RWD drug development decision-making. Engaging with a community of dedicated professionals will allow me to learn from their experiences and perspectives, promote DUO principles, and ultimately deepen my knowledge and skills in this critical area of healthcare.

What professional accomplishment are you most proud of?
I am most proud of utilizing model-informed quantitative pharmacology approaches to determine optimal dosage and assess the benefit–risk profiles of drugs throughout the drug development cycle in a learn-and-confirm paradigm. Witnessing the positive impact of our quantitative tools in reducing development time, costs, and the number of patients involved—while simultaneously improving the probability of success—has reinforced my commitment to patients. This experience also highlighted the effectiveness of model-informed strategies in achieving our common goal of developing effective therapies. These learnings not only enhanced my professional growth but also deepened my passion for making a meaningful difference in patients' journeys.

How do you keep focused and motivated?
To stay focused and motivated, I prioritize setting clear, achievable goals and breaking them down into manageable tasks. This approach provides a sense of direction and accomplishment as I complete each step. I also established a routine that includes regular breaks to recharge, which boosts my productivity. Surrounding myself with positive influences, such as inspiring mentors and supportive colleagues, helps maintain my enthusiasm. Practicing mindfulness and reflection keeps me grounded and connected to my purpose, reminding me of the bigger picture and my dedication to make a meaningful difference in patients' journeys. Finally, celebrating small wins along the way helps sustain my motivation and reinforces my commitment to my goals.

What is the most important leadership lesson you have learned the hard way?
One of the most important leadership lessons I have learned the hard way is the importance of resisting the urge to take over tasks myself, instead of empowering the team to learn and grow. In the past, when faced with tight deadlines or challenging projects, I often jumped in to complete tasks, thinking it would ensure success and efficiency. Over time and with experience, I realized that by stepping back and providing opportunities to the team to tackle challenges, I could foster their skills, boost their confidence, and cultivate a culture of collaboration and innovation. Allowing them to take the lead not only enhances their capabilities but also strengthens the overall team, ultimately resulting in better outcomes and a more engaged and motivated cross-functional team.

When you are not working, how do you spend your free time?
When I am not working, I enjoy spending my time with my family and friends, whether through casual gatherings or shared hobbies. Cooking and experimenting with new recipes are another passion of mine, as it combines creativity with the joy of sharing meals with loved ones. Finally, I often dedicate some time to personal development, whether through online courses or workshops, to continuously learn and grow.
