What does being the Student and Trainee (ST) Community Mentor mean to you?
I am thrilled to be serving as the new mentor for the ST Community! In the short time I have worked with them, I have been struck by their energy and enthusiasm for ASCPT and their remarkable collegiality. I feel fortunate to have the opportunity to support and learn from such a dynamic group.
What is your favorite part of being the Student and Trainee (ST) Community Mentor?
I have always enjoyed meeting new people, and this role has introduced me to a group I might not have connected with otherwise. It has been a rewarding experience to get to know such thoughtful, engaged, and motivated members.
How do you keep focused and motivated?
I truly love my job, so staying focused and motivated usually comes naturally. One thing that helps, though, is time-blocking my calendar. I set aside specific blocks of time to work on particular tasks, and once that block ends, I move on to the next item. It creates a sense of daily structure and momentum – almost having small built-in deadlines – which really helps me stay on track.
What is the one thing people would be surprised to know about you?
Right now, I am training for my first Ironman Triathlon – a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile bike ride, and a 26.2-mile marathon. While I have completed shorter triathlons before, this full-distance challenge is pushing me to build not only my physical strength but also my mental resilience. The experience is teaching me a lot about perseverance, goal setting, and the importance of pushing beyond comfort zones.
Dr McRae has been a member of ASCPT since 2002.
