What does being a 2024 presidential trainee mean to you?
I was extremely honored to be selected as a 2024 Presidential Trainee. I am very passionate about my research and have enjoyed being an engaged member of the ASCPT Student/Trainee Community. Therefore, receiving recognition for the things I love is awesome!
What was your favorite part about attending the Annual Meeting?
My favorite part of attending the Annual Meeting was connecting with other trainees and creating fun memories together as well as learning about each other's projects and career interests. These connections are the beginning of future collaborations and career networks and really help continue the high level of engagement seen among ASCPT members of all career levels.
Who has inspired you in your career?
My mentor, Dr. Mary Peace McRae, is an amazing scientist and mentor. She continuously supports me, and I see her advice for questions both lab related and life related. She has inspired me to pursue a career in academia and become a research advisor to provide the same supportive mentorship to future trainees.
What has been the greatest challenge in your career?
I almost did not make it to pharmacy school. I had really poor grades my first two years of undergrad and was discouraged from applying by a faculty member. However, I decided to use his feedback as motivation and spent my last two years getting up early to study, attending office hours, and becoming involved in a research project. This was a huge turning point in my life and through it, I discovered a passion for research and learning and I am proud to now be a PharmD–PhD dual-degree candidate. Just because something may be difficult at first does not mean that you should not do it!

When you are not working how do you spend your free time?
I have two cute cats, Ricky and Julian, and I love to spend time with them. I also enjoy trying new restaurants around Richmond, VA. I love trivia and have recently discovered how fun karaoke is!
Emily has been a member of ASCPT since 2020.
