Mark Lovern, PhD, Executive Director, Medical Science Services, Fortrea, Raleigh, North Carolina
Why did you decide to join ASCPT?
I joined ASCPT to broaden my perspective beyond my core area of expertise (pharmacometrics) and engage with a wider variety of colleagues and constituencies contributing to pharmaceutical R&D.
As a member for 16 years, why have you decided to stay with ASCPT?
ASCPT has done an amazing job of evolving to meet the needs of our ever-changing industry. Staying involved with ASCPT has helped me stay current with the latest trends and topics in clinical and quantitative pharmacology.
Do you have a favorite tip or trick for clinical practice or research that you want to share with fellow members?
Here is one I frequently impart to anyone in our field willing to listen: “Generally speaking, it is not our scientific acumen that determines our impact. Instead, it is our ability to communicate effectively and persuasively.”
How do you keep focused and motivated?
Keeping the patient in mind always seems to work for me. I find myself particularly energized when working on projects for which the unmet medical need is the greatest.
When you are not working, how do you spend your free time? I love to cook and entertain. Feeding friends and family is one of my love languages.
What was your childhood dream job?
Astronaut.
What is one thing people would be surprised to know about you?
Amongst my other credentials, I am an ordained minister and have officiated two wedding ceremonies (so far).
Dr. Lovern has been a member of ASCPT since 2009.
