ASCPT Journals: Opportunities to learn, share, and lead

Author: Kellie Schoolar Reynolds, PharmD Published on 10/16/2014 12:00:00 AM

ASCPT has two high-quality journals, Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics (CPT) and CPT:Pharmacometrics & Systems Pharmacology (CPT:PSP), that provide clinical pharmacologists many opportunities to learn skills, gain knowledge, apply the knowledge, share the impact of clinical pharmacology, and lead.  CPT is a highly respected journal (impact factor of 7.39) that spans the broad reaches of the clinical pharmacology discipline, from drug discovery though clinical utilization.  Each issue of CPT includes basic research across many topics in clinical pharmacology.  The issues also include invited papers- State of the Art papers, Reviews, and different categories of Opinion papers- which focus on a specific tool, therapeutic area or drug development topic.   You are encouraged to share the papers with scientists outside the field of clinical pharmacology who are interested in the issue’s topic.  This is an excellent opportunity to share the value and impact of clinical pharmacology with a broader audience.  The Clinical Pharmacogenetics Implementation Consortium (CPIC) publishes its guidelines that describe the interpretation of genetic information as a tool for optimum drug therapy in CPT, demonstrating the relevance of pharmacogenetics.

CPT:PSP was introduced as a member of the ASCPT journal family in 2012.  As its name implies, CPT:PSP focuses on quantitative methods as applied to pharmacology and therapeutics.  Article types include original research, Reviews, Perspectives, and Tutorials.  The Tutorials, written by well-known scientists, assist individuals and groups as they learn and sharpen quantitative skills that are important during drug development.  The Tutorials are grouped together as a virtual issue of CPT:PSP on the journal's website.  If you are not familiar with the Tutorials, visit the journal's website today, which can be accessed through the ASCPT website. It is well worth the time.  CPT:PSP is an online-only publication, with new articles available every Wednesday.  This journal allows readers to appreciate the clinical utility of quantitative sciences.

Both journals provide members and other clinical pharmacologists a potential home for their research papers.  If you want to submit your work to either journal, make sure you read recent issues and become familiar with the style of the papers and the way successful authors link their findings to drug development and clinical impact.  The individual journal websites, found through the ASCPT website, provide detailed information about the submission process.

Are you ready to be a leader in ASCPT?  The journals are a great place to start.  The journals provide more than a home for member research papers, they also provide opportunities to demonstrate Society leadership.  You can start as a journal reviewer.  If your area of expertise aligns with topics covered in one or both journals, sign up on the ASCPT website as a reviewer and include specific keywords that indicate your area of expertise.  When you are invited to review, make sure you respond to each step in the process in a timely manner and follow all instructions.  You are more likely to be called on again if you provide a timely and thorough review.  After you demonstrate leadership as a reviewer, other opportunities in ASCPT may open up for you.  Look for opportunities that interest you and fit your skill set.
