American Society for Clinical Pharmacology & Therapeutics Names Chief Executive Officer
Alexandria, VA (January 1, 2023) - The American Society for Clinical Pharmacology & Therapeutics (ASCPT) is pleased to announce the appointment of Abigail W. Gorman, MBA, as its Chief Executive Officer (CEO). Ms. Gorman will be replacing outgoing CEO Sharon J. Swan, FASAE, CAE, who is retiring after nearly 25 years with ASCPT.
Ms. Gorman has a proven track record as a successful executive who has served in academic medical and profession-based associations, along with a for-profit strategic consulting services firm. Ms. Gorman previously served as the Chief of Staff for the American Institute of Architects (AIA).
During her time at AIA, Ms. Gorman successfully guided the association through the disruption caused by the global COVID-19 pandemic, finding ways to launch new member resources while minimizing financial threats. She created an inclusive, people-first human resources strategy for AIA that led to an employee retention rate of more than 85% as well as year-over-year improvements in employee engagement and satisfaction. Ms. Gorman was responsible for securing an equity partner for AIA’s Contract Documents business that resulted in a historic revenue windfall for the association, and she oversaw a multi-million dollar, multi-year digital transformation of AIA’s web and communications strategies.
Prior to joining the AIA staff, Ms. Gorman held various positions with the American Dental Education Association (ADEA), beginning as the Associate Executive Director for Finance and Operations and culminating in serving as the Deputy Director of ADEA.
"It's an honor for me to take on this role at ASCPT, an organization that has long been admired for excellence and commitment to the fields of clinical pharmacology and translational science,” said Ms. Gorman. As a partner with the Board, the staff and I will build on that excellence for which ASCPT is known, continue to advance the value proposition for our members and their important work, and assure a welcoming and inclusive space for scientists to share their ideas and advance their careers."
As an organization with the ultimate goal of advancing clinical pharmacology, translational science, and therapeutics for the benefit of patients and society, ASCPT is certain Ms. Gorman’s breadth of experience will be an asset to the Society.
“I am delighted to welcome Abigail Gorman as the incoming CEO of ASCPT,” said Dr. Mark Dresser, Senior Vice President of Biomarker Sciences and Clinical Pharmacology at Gilead, and President of ASCPT. “With her expertise in finance and business administration and association management, her passion for ASCPT’s mission, and her deep commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, we are very fortunate to have Ms. Gorman serve and lead the Society during an unprecedented time of change for professional associations.”
Ms. Gorman holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in History from Smith College and a master’s in business administration with a concentration in finance from the Darden Graduate School of Business Administration at the University of Virginia.
