I am ASCPT: Ashley Springer

Ashley Springer, PharmD, MSPGx, RPh, Indiana School of Medicine, Angola, Indiana

What does being a 2025 Presidential Trainee mean to you?
Being named as a 2025 Presidential Trainee was an amazing honor for me. This award reinforces that I am doing meaningful and important research in the space of clinical pharmacology and therapeutics. It demonstrates that people believe that the work I am doing can make an impact on people's lives and the implementation of research into practice.

What is the most important leadership lesson you have learned the hard way?
I have had many different types of leadership positions, and with every new position, I learn a new lesson. However, the hardest lesson I have learned is something I remind myself of when I take on a new position – not to be afraid to rely on the people around me for help. Instead of trying to do everything myself and spreading myself thin to complete everything, I can ask for help from other officers and members. This lesson has not only benefited me and added to my leadership attributes, but it also benefits the organization by allowing everyone to be involved and use their strengths to further the organization.

Who has inspired you in your career?
During my education and career, I have had amazing mentors who have guided and inspired me in their own way. However, my biggest inspiration for my career and the path I have chosen is my mom. She has been a part of healthcare her whole life as a nurse and now as a nurse practitioner. Seeing how she changes people's lives by showing empathy and compassion inspires me to want to change peoples’ lives for the better with how I treat people and what I do for a living. She also demonstrates persistence and leadership as she has always worked hard in everything she does, including her education. She worked to become a nurse practitioner while working full-time as a supervisor and taking care of her family.

When you are not working, how do you spend your time?
During my free time, I enjoy working out/playing sports, spending time with my friends and family, watching movies/TV, and listening to music.

How do you keep focused and motivated?
The main thing that has always been my motivator and kept me focused on the task, no matter how hard, is to think of all the people's lives that will be impacted by what I am doing. Everybody knows that having health problems can be stressful for patients and their caregivers, which results in a decrease in their quality of life. So, I am motivated by wanting people to live their best life, and I think what I am doing could help contribute to that by hopefully decreasing some health burdens and stress.

Dr. Springer has been a member of ASCPT since 2023.
