What does being the Membrane Transporter (MT) community vice chair mean to you?
Serving as Co-Chair of the Membrane Transporter Community entails a commitment to stewardship of the discipline, with a focus on fostering scientific growth and innovation to advance the field of drug transporters. I aspire to engage in meaningful collaborations with a diverse group of professionals to design and implement educational initiatives, foster interdisciplinary engagement, and expand and strengthen my professional network.
What is your favorite part of being the Membrane Transporter (MT) community vice chair?
My favorite part of serving as the Membrane Transporter Community Vice Chair is having the ability to facilitate conversations and collaborations among the diverse community membership in order to transform ideas into tangible outcomes. As Vice Chair, it is very humbling and extremely rewarding to see how our collective efforts have the power to strengthen ASCPT and rapidly advance our discipline.
What is the most important leadership you have learned the hard way?
The most important leadership lesson that I have learned the hard way is that silence does not always equate to agreement. Therefore, it is imperative to proactively create a safe space for all voices to ensure an inclusive, cohesive, and effective decision-making process.
What has been the greatest challenge in your career?
The most significant challenge in my career has been maintaining and sustaining the delicate balance between fulfilling multiple leadership roles in scientific societies and managing other professional responsibilities. Effectively balancing multiple and often competing priorities demands resilience and flexibility to adapt and effectively prioritize without compromising personal well-being.
How do you keep focused and motivated?
I maintain focus by setting clear and attainable objectives and breaking tasks into manageable steps. Reflecting on my work's broader impact keeps me motivated. I enjoy reading (mainly fiction) and nature photography, which helps me recharge and maintain clarity.
Dr. Arya has been a member of ASCPT since 2018.
