What does being a 2025 and 2026 Presidential Trainee mean to you?
Just a few years ago, I was deep into a completely different career path as a chemist. Discovering clinical pharmacology and pharmacokinetic modeling sparked a passion I had not expected. I was both excited and worried that I would not have what it takes to succeed in a new field, and the sunk cost fallacy made me question if it was “too late.” Being selected as a Presidential Trainee in both 2025 and 2026 is deeply meaningful to me. It affirms that taking the risk was worth it, that my past was not wasted, and that it is never too late to pursue what truly inspires you.
What was your favorite part of attending the Annual Meeting?
My favorite part of ASCPT 2025 was definitely the people. Connecting with others who contribute such impactful work in clinical pharmacology was inspiring and energizing. I do not often have the opportunity to be surrounded by so many like-minded individuals, so it was really special to meet new peers, hear about their diverse experiences, and learn from their perspectives. Overall, the networking was great and allowed me to have meaningful conversations that broadened my understanding of the field – and reminded me why I love being a part of it.
Who has inspired you in your career?
I have been fortunate to be inspired by many people, but there are two people who I truly would not be here without. I first discovered clinical pharmacology through a course called “Topics in Drug Discovery” taught by Dr. Elliot Offman (Vice President, Clinical and Translational Pharmacology, Drug Development at Certara). His story was inspiring, and it was those early conversations with Elliot that helped me build the confidence to pursue a PhD in pharmacokinetic modeling. Today, I am incredibly grateful to be mentored by Dr. Andrea Edginton (Hallman Director, School of Pharmacy at the University of Waterloo, and President/COO at MAPflow), whose guidance has been the most impactful part of my academic journey. She brings so much knowledge and experience to every conversation we have, and her mentorship is a rare combination of compassion, humor, critical thinking, and strategic foresight. Andrea actively supports my growth and has helped shape me into an independent researcher who is confident and well-equipped to tackle life beyond graduate school.
How do you stay focused and motivated?
When I am not working, I love to stay active and connect with others through playing volleyball, tennis, and going on outdoor adventures, including camping, canoeing, and paddleboarding. Other than that, my partner and I enjoy spending time building things and renovating our century home – a project that has been both challenging and rewarding as we turn it into a space that we are truly proud of.
Shirley has been a member of ASCPT since 2024.
